Video Vegetables Victoria: soil health

TLF ID M017617

This video of 6.5 minutes includes interviews with vegetable growers who have been in the industry for a long time, talking about the development of fertiliser practices from collecting manures and spreading them by hand to the use of chemical fertilisers. The farmers talk about the extra benefits of manures for soil health but balance this with the pressure for more intense production and higher output in order to make a profit.

Educational value
  • This resource may be of some value for year 7 students of science, considering how technology has transformed agriculture and, in particular, vegetable growing. The farmers interviewed were not all convinced that the new fertilisers were better for the soil. This resource could be useful to stimulate a discussion on the balance between the need for sustainable agricultural systems and the pressure to increase food production to feed a growing population. Or, more broadly, to discuss the question: Is the development of new technology always better?
